Country Dancing Tucson

Country dancing Tucson style is really fun.

As locals who love to dance (especially country), we've been to almost all of these great spots. We'll show you the ropes for the two-stepping, swing and line dancing places to be.

3 Country Dance Bars & Halls - An Overview

Here you have the popular spots to have fun dancing, watching, and/or listening to the music. Have yourself a western-styled evening of nightlife in Tucson. These are the main clubs to go to in town.

The Maverick King of Clubs

One of Tucson’s main go-to country dance halls.

Probably the most "historic" country music club in town. Open since 1962, they had their 60th anniversary in January 2023. We remember its much smaller location at Swan and 22nd Street. There was a fire, causing a move to this larger facility. Great idea for dancing, rather than rebuilding. It's also somewhat more centrally located now.

It has a good size dance floor. You'll often be out there dancing to a live country band. But your dancing two-steps will likely be maneuvering, reversing, pausing, and go-round on the most crowded nights. That's usually Fridays and Saturdays, but sometimes on Wednesdays too.

HOURS - SCHEDULING TIPS

  • They're closed on Mondays & Tuesdays.
  • Other nights enjoy their Happy Hour from 5-7pm. With specials on drinks and some simple food items.
  • No cover on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Cover charge is normally begins at approximately 8pm. We've gotten there early, to catch a meal first, and weren't charged a cover.
  • Get there before you start your dance routine, and order from their menu. Burgers, nachos, sandwiches, soup & chile, and much more.

COUNTRY DANCE LESSONS

Yes, of course at this top dance club you get to take Country Dance Lessons.

Check it out if you're new to this style of dancing. You'll be able to blend in better on the dance floor!

Whiskey Roads

We were glad when this place opened.

Because there was no country dancing Tucson style on the northwest side of town since The New West closed in 2002. And it's the one closest to our home.

Entrance to a local bar and grill where they have a dance floor

It's a Bar & Grill with a pretty extensive variety menu for lunch and dinner Saturday & Sundays, with a Sunday brunch, too.

  • They have early bird food specials Wed-Sat, 4-7pm.
  • Happy Hour drink specials, Wed-Sat, 4-7pm.
  • Check out their Friday Fish Fry deal from 4-7pm.
  • They rotate a "Beer of the Month" pints for $5.

DANCING/MUSIC

It gets pretty busy on the weekends. Reservations recommended for meals.

  • The dance floor is a good size, they claim it's the "biggest dance floor in Southern Arizona." We won't dispute that fact.
  • Stop in and publicly exercise your vocals at Sunday Night Karaoke, 9:30pm-1:30am.
  • Or listen to (and dance to!) the bands on Fri., Sat. & Sun. Sometimes a live DJ produces the sounds.
  • FREE dance lessons with Country Bandits, from 7-8pm, Saturdays.

They also observe some fun yearly holidays like Valentine's Day 💝and St. Patrick's Day ☘️ (we're Irish, and have been there for their corned beef & cabbage).

LOCATION

In the Foothills Mall, southwestern corner of the mall building.

  • West of Barnes & Noble, a bit behind Applebees.
  • 2290 West Ina Road, west of the La Cholla Blvd intersection.

The Outlaw Bar & Grill

For the bar's size, the dance floor could almost be described as huge! It's been around for quite a while, attracts many locals, as it's also a neighborhood bar.

Business frontage of a local bar and grill with dancing and bands

They bill themselves as "your friendly neighborhood dive bar & grill" and we'd say that's pretty accurate.

  • They're open every night.
  • Bands on the weekends, which is the most popular time here.
  • You might catch some FREE country dance lessons on Fri/Sat nights.
  • Special room for karaoke lovers, each night.
  • Have traditional bar food, like burgers and fries.

Bonus Country Dancing-Like Spots

These aren't your traditional venues for country dancing in Tucson. But they could be worth a look.

Cowpony Bar

The first time we tried this place, we were laughing about its name. Is it some kind of weird hybrid animal?

It's a small homey bar, with a western style vibe & lots of character. Not a true bar for country dancing in Tucson. As they don't technically have a dance floor. But you know how that is - sometimes people will dance in the aisles. (We've done that!)

  • Open everyday from 11-2am.
  • They often have live music, usually featuring local performers. Never a cover.
  • Plus there's a DJ, or order up your favorite tunes on the Juke Box Controlled From Your Phone.
  • Karaoke on Sundays with Rod Restless.
  • 9 Big Screen TVs to keep track of your favorite team.

LOCATION: 6510 E Tanque Verde Rd, right after the big curve on Wilmott going westward. Just about hidden from view, it's set back. Turn into the Zio Pepe parking lot, You'll See it Back Aways.

For more details call 520-721-2781.

Southern Arizona Dance Center

This dance hall focuses on the more traditional country dance styles. Like Square, Round and Contra Dancing. The sponsors (Square and Round Dance Association of Southern Arizona: SARDASA) say it's "where to dance in Southern Arizona."

  • If you already know how to do this style of country dancing Tucson has the place for you.
