Most visitors drive up in about 1-1.25 hours, making Mount Lemmon an easy day trip from Tucson.
This mountain sits amidst the astonishing Santa Catalina Mountains, just northeast of Tucson. Part of the Coronado National Forest. The Catalina Highway (Sky Island Scenic Byway) takes you from the bottom to the small town & Ski Valley at the top.

The road is fully paved and well maintained, but it is steep and winding. It would add to your time to the top - but we definitely advise making use of the pullouts (so faster cars can go by) and the amazing viewpoints.
Driving to the top is an experience.
Climbing a hoodoo!Catalina Highway is itself a destination. Over roughly 27 miles, you’ll pass through multiple ecological/climate zones, from nearly the lowest to the highest.

Hairpin Viewpoint near Ski Valley.Weather is variable, hiking on the mountain is excellent now. Fabulous wildflowers (photo op), because of the rain/snow in winter.
Most popular for locals escaping the heat, while enjoying a different environment. Weekends are busiest. It's a great difference from hiking the desert (not recommended !), taking trails through shaded forest.
Autumn is one of the best times to see Mount Lemmon by Tucson Arizona.
After summer, feeling the crisp air is delightful. It's where we go to see autumn colors, late October through November. To top it off, crowds on the mountain lessen drastically.
Enjoy playing in the snow - Tucsonans love going up there to do that. It's the chance we all get to change our climate quickly!

Does Mount Lemmon get snow?
