Motels grew with road travel culture in the U.S. during the mid-1900s. Called Motor Hotels, they became stops for traveling the historic routes of what was US 80 & 89. US 80 still goes through Tombstone AZ, and Route 66 routes through Flagstaff Arizona.
One historic section of what's now US 77 is "Miracle Mile" (on the National of Historic Places) has a remnant of a non-chain motel with parking right outside the door. It's Monterey Court, Now a Music Venue!
