Situated north of downtown, with easy I-10 access. Super 8 by Wyndham is one of the more affordable options, geared toward short stays where price matters most.

When we're on a road trip, we like overnight stays for fast on/off arrival and departure.

Common chains are clustered along the interstate. These motels in Tucson AZ are right off the I-10 Freeway, from South to North:

SOUTH OF DOWNTOWN:

  • The Economy Inn Might Work for you. The ratings go from kinda bad to excellent - everyone has their own take. 
  • Further north is The Super 8 by Wyndham. Very easy in and out from I-10 onto 22nd Street. Again some liked it, especially the staff, others didn't like its age and breakfast.
  • And right down the road is Motel 6 Tucson AZ. It's pet friendly, but some complained about the pet area's lack of maintenance. The same type of complaints about the pool. Still, many good reviews for inside areas and rooms.

NORTH OF DOWNTOWN:

  • Grant Road is a main thoroughfare through town. Get off I-10 exit 256, heading west, you'll soon reach The Super 8 by Wyndham Tucson/Grant Road Area. Many good reviews, like the hot tub, but some were dissatisfied with the pool and breakfast.
  • Motel 6 - North has among the best reviews for motels in Tucson AZ. We recommend this one, which is near fuel stops and several restaurants.
  • Red Roof Inn off Ina Road is a good stop. Over-all very good reviews, and it's near a Denny's for your square meal options.

Near Tucson Airport (Best for Late Arrivals)

Getting off your flight, you'll want a quick stay among the hotels in Tucson AZ - to relax after the airline ordeal. We're sure like that, we're always beat and just want to get to the room to refresh for the next day's activities.

Motel stays near the airport will be practical, not scenic. But they're good for early flights. These are reasonably priced with good ratings.

South Tucson / Budget Corridor

This part of town the budget-heavy area. But it's near shopping, restaurants and other services. Most places to stay are basic, with pretty-much low rates. Expectations: not deluxe!

Benson Highway, which links up with the I-10 interstate, has several you might want to check.

  • The Kennedy Tucson Sure Stay might be the most comfortable of these options. You'll like their excellent reviews.
  • The Round-Up Motel has been around a long time. Some quote it as being "historic." We haven't tried a staycay here. Although way back we might have gone here for dancing! We've stayed in places just like it. If you don't mind its age, it may be just the thing, at 1503 E-Benson Hwy. Call to inquire about dates & prices: 520-746-8050.
  • The Super Inn at 1031 E-Benson Hwy is another bargain with good and not so good reviews.

  • Common amenities: Wi-Fi & convenient USB ports, parking, pool.
  • People comment on excellent staff, nice pool, clean rooms with comfortable beds, and more.

Super 8 by Wyndham

Think functional rather than comfortable.

Ratings at Expedia.com achieve 6.6 in this 2-star motel.

Best for: Lowest-cost stays, traveling through overnight in cooler weather.

  • Bare-bones lodging.
  • Good for short stays if budget matters most as it's right off the freeway.
  • Most people say that it's clean, has helpful staff.
  • The staff always replies to comments. And the approval ratings have picked up pretty well throughout 2026. Some saying they'd stay there again.

  • Minimal amenities, but people liked the 24/7 security there.
  • There were complaints, but many gave it a 10!

North of downtown and near the University area.

Best for: Budget stays near downtown (very few in the downtown area compare to their rates).

  • Not far off I-10 for quicker check-in.
  • Convenient for continuing northbound travel.
  • Low pricing, with Expedia ratings between okay to bad with a few excellent!

If for some reason we had to choose among motels in Tucson AZ, we wouldn't prefer this one.

What to Expect from Motels in Tucson

Motels grew with road travel culture in the U.S. during the mid-1900s. Called Motor Hotels, they became stops for traveling the historic routes of what was US 80 & 89. US 80 still goes through Tombstone AZ, and Route 66 routes through Flagstaff Arizona.

One historic section of what's now US 77 is "Miracle Mile" (on the National of Historic Places) has a remnant of a non-chain motel with parking right outside the door. It's Monterey Court, Now a Music Venue!

  • The Downtown Clifton, Armory Park area has old-timey touches. 10-minute walk from downtown Tucson. Excellent ratings. Call for reservations: 520-623-3163.
  • The 3 Palms Tucson North Foothills has some rooms with parking at the door, others near your room.
  • El Pais Hotel & Campground is a unique family run place on 3445 E-Benson Hwy with fabulous reviews. You can even stay in a vintage trailer. Call for more details: 520-336-0144.
  • Two others are like mini-resorts. We mention them because many entries are at ground level, though a short walk to/from parking is needed. Pricing will be variable, but definitely not low bargain rates.
